Short guide to Ushuaia

The spectacular capital city of the Tierra del Fuego province, Ushuaia used to be for a long time the world’s southernmost city. The city can be found in a large bay, on the island of Tierra del Fuego. It is a spectacular tourist destination, being home to some fantastic attractions, such as the Tierra del Fuego National Park, the Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse, a museum and so on.

As for the natural attractions, the region is home to some fantastic wild creatures, such as orcas, seals, penguins and numerous species of birds. In the vicinity of Ushuaia there are also numerous ski spots such as Cerro Castor. Visiting this fantastic city is a great choice and will surely make you a memorable holiday.

Tierra del Fuego National Park

The nearest city to this national park is Ushuaia. The park is a fantastic tourist attraction. It is characterized by dramatic scenery, being home to fantastic mountains, forests, glaciers, waterfalls, smaller lakes and even parts of two big lakes, Roca and Fagnano. The major highlights of the national park are the following: the Pipo River cascade, the Ensanada Bay, the Beagle Channel, the Laguna Negra and so on. The beautiful Antarctic beech forests are home to numerous species of animals, such as the Andean Fox, the guanaco and so on. The most popular animals are the fantastic sea lions and penguins. The world’s southernmost national park is a must-see of the Tierra del Fuego province.

Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse

The word “eclaireurs” means “enlighteners” in English. The popular lighthouse can be found on one of the Les Eclaireurs islets. The 10 m tall lighthouse was built of brick. The red and white lighthouse has a black lantern on its top and is still in use. It is a popular attraction of Ushuaia, being reachable by boat. Local people call the lighthouse the one at the end of the world. It is probably South America’s most photographed lighthouse.

For many nature lovers and wildlife observers Ushuaia is a paradise, but not only for them. Tourists are also amazed by the fantastic wild creatures that can be found at Ushuaia: the orcas, the seals and the penguins. Besides these animals, there are also different species of birds here. Many of the animal species that live here colonize the islands of the Beagle Channel. There are organized boat tours to these islands, so that visitors can admire them from a distance of some meters. What can be more exciting for a nature lover?

Cerro Castor

As I already mentioned it, there are fantastic ski spots nearby Ushuaia. One of these and perhaps the most popular ski resort is Cerro Castor. Located only about 25 km from Ushuaia, the fantastic ski resort attracts dozens of visitors each year. It was opened in 1999 and since then it became very famous among visitors. With great features, such as ten lift facilities, restaurants, skiing school, recreation facilities and so on, Cerro Castor is the perfect destination for the lovers of winter sports.
